IN SCBWI is pleased to offer a series of roundtable events led by industry professionals in 2023 FREE of charge to Indiana members (you must reside in Indiana). This one is with editor, Alyza Liu.

Alyza Liu is an editor at Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, assisting Krista Vitola and Nicole Ellul on their lists while building her own. Previously, she assisted Justin Chanda and Denene Millner. Prior to Simon & Schuster she studied at New York University, where she graduated magna cum laude, majoring in East Asian Studies and minoring in English and Studio Art. She’s an aficionado of bad movies, a defender of the stupid fun, and a connoisseur of the strange. Her dream is to become a Jin Yong heroine, but in the meantime she daylights in publishing.

She is looking primarily for books written by authors of colour, queer authors, and disabled authors across all age ranges and formats (excepting board books), as well as translated genre fiction from Latin America, Africa, and Asia, and is most drawn to emotionally driven stories with strong voices, atmospheric writing, and complicated characters with a fresh point of view. She’s also a big fan of monsters, mean girls, and wuxia.

How the roundtable works:

Attendees will submit a picture book manuscript of no more than 1,000 words by April 14, 2023, to Teresa (indiana-ra2 (at) scbwi.org) with “PB Editor Roundtable” in the subject line. Alyza will provide written feedback which we will return to you before the Zoom roundtable on May 27th.

Attendees are asked to read the manuscripts of all 7 other participants so they might understand Alyza’s feedback for each person. They are not expected to provide critiques for anyone.

During the Zoom roundtable, Alyza will spend 15 minutes on each person where they can ask questions about the feedback.

The Zoom link to the event will be sent to you by 6pm the night before from ARA Alicia Novo ( indiana-ara (at) scbwi.org). Please check your spam box if you can’t find it.
