2021 is turning out to be the year of the graphic novels for IN SCBWI! To complement our graphic novel conference in January, we are so excited to have art director Kirk Benshoff from First Second follow up with a presentation on the topic. Kirk is offering paid critiques and there is a submission opportunity to him afterwards.

Kirk Benshoff is an accomplished graphic designer/art director at Macmillan managing their First Second imprint with over twenty years of experience creating graphic novels, trade books, magazines, logos, illustrations, websites, and more.

EXTRA! Portfolio critiques available:

Kirk is offering written critiques (of portfolios only; no manuscripts, please) at $45 each. If you would like to purchase a critique, you need to do so at the time of registration though you don’t have to send the materials until March 16, 2021. The feedback will be returned to you by May 1, 2021.

Please send the following as a single PDF to Diane Bradley-Kantor, indiana-ra@scbwi.org in an email no later than March 16, 2021:

1) A short bio about what you have been doing as an illustrator, highlights of your artwork, and specifically where you want to be going with your work. Preferably one page only, and please include it in the single PDF as the first page.

2) Up to 10 images that you have in your current portfolio.

3) Please put “Kirk Benshoff Critique” in the subject line of your email and label your attachment as “your name_Portfolio.pdf” e.g. “Teresa Robeson_portfolio.pdf”

The critiques will be completed by the date of the webinar, and Diane will email the feedback to you.

Submission* opportunities:

All attendees will have an opportunity to submit to Kirk. The specific submission information will be emailed, along with the link to the replay, to attendees post-conference.

*Submission is the publishing terminology for sending an editor something to consider for publication. Macmillan is normally closed to unsolicited submissions so this is an excellent opportunity to get your work to an editor who is otherwise unavailable to unagented stories. Submission does not mean “paid critique” of which there is only a limited number.
